COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In July, Melissa Mace was named the Spokane NAACP’s first executive director—after four years of planning—and she will boost community outreach and program structure with initiatives like a new youth chapter and the Freedom Fund Gala on Nov. 15.  Inlander
  • At a recent Saturday Coffee in the Garden meetup, about 20 neighbors gathered at the community garden (named Sn̓k̓ʷan̓ɬqtn̓, meaning 'garden' in Salish) near Shadle Park High School to learn how a once neglected city corner was transformed into a learning space for native plants and local food growth (with students from nearby schools now using the garden in their classes).  The Spokesman-Review
  • Residents in Spokane's Five Mile area have opposed a proposed development of 24 townhomes near Austin Road because unpaved roads and a lack of sidewalks create safety risks for emergency access + city officials will review concerns raised at a Wednesday public meeting.  KXLY
  • Spokane City Council and City Employees are hosting a community food drive and fundraiser from October 15 to December 15 to support the Zilch food program and Bite2Go weekend meals for public school students — drop boxes for non-perishable foods and monetary donations are set up on the first, third, and seventh floors at City Hall and in the Chase Gallery.  City of Spokane
  • For nearly 20 years, Gonzaga University’s Center for Community Engagement has hosted weekly meals and game nights at O’Malley Senior Apartments—efforts that ease food insecurity and isolation among local seniors—while offering students a chance to learn from older generations.   • A Harry Potter concert is scheduled to take place in Spokane soon—organizers have not released details about the venue or ticket sales yet.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students explore many trades and learn new skills at ABC Trades Night at NewTech Prep in Hillyard this evening—an event running from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that lets visitors work with heavy machinery and check out career paths in areas such as dental assistance and cosmetology.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During the opening weekend of modern firearm deer season, check stations in eastern Washington collected 305 samples for testing chronic wasting disease from deer, elk, and moose—Last Resort recorded 47 samples and Deer Park 34. Meanwhile, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife partners with local tribes to hold its annual walleye netting on Lake Roosevelt in the last week of October.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Thurman Johnson, Spokane County’s noxious weed specialist, detected the invasive Palmer amaranth in fields and at a Safeway parking lot—actions that led the board to issue a recall of Signature Pet Care Songbird Blend Wild Bird Food due to contaminated seeds. The recall advises affected customers to return unopened bags and carefully dispose of any remaining seed.  Inlander

  • Several food drives took place Wednesday in Airway Heights to support active military families facing pay delays during the ongoing shutdown—West Plains Chamber of Commerce collected donations at First Interstate Bank while Second Harvest supplied ten pallets of food to Fairchild Air Force Base.  KHQ
  • Residents across Washington will join the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill today at 10:16 a.m. to practice drop, cover and hold on—over 1.6 million registrants statewide include nearly 47,000 in Spokane with local schools participating.  KHQ
  • On Friday, Spokane Falls Boulevard will close between Post and Lincoln Streets from 4:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. as Avista assembles a crane to relocate rock at the Monroe Street Dam — traffic control staff will manage the flow while street parking and lanes are reduced.  KXLY
  • Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all city facilities to be lowered to half-staff in remembrance of Eastern State Hospital security guard Colleen Bass, who died in the line of duty on Sept. 27—flags will remain lowered until close of business as directed by Governor Bob Ferguson.  City of Spokane

  • At VisitLethbridge.com Arena, the Spokane Chiefs beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 in a shootout as goalie Linus Vieillard made three saves — earning his first WHL win in his third game while Mathis Preston scored the deciding goal.
