- ➤ Gonzaga business students are partnering with the Northeast Public Development Authority to work on multi-year projects that boost revitalization in Spokane’s historic Hillyard neighborhood. The relay model passes research and insights from one semester’s team to the next (including market research and strategic planning) to support steady community progress (driving improvements along Market Street). - ➤ Dr. Rebecca A. Bull Schaefer from Gonzaga University School of Business Administration has been nominated for the 2026 YWCA Spokane Women of Achievement Awards—recognizing her commitment to students and the local community. Final honorees will be announced in January. Gonzaga University
- ➤ A cougar was seen Tuesday morning near a home on Spokane’s south hill close to South Side Sports Complex — a home security camera recorded the animal just after 3 a.m. near the intersection of 53rd and Crestline. KXLY
- ➤ The Salvation Army will host a free trunk or treat event on Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 222 East Indiana Avenue in Spokane, where families can enjoy decorated car trunks, festive music, and $1 hot dogs to support local programs. KXLY

- ➤ North 40 Outfitters will open its new flagship store today at 7 a.m. at 14411 N. Newport Highway in Mead — the 113,000-square-foot space has a garden center, an indoor archery lane, a fly shop with West Slope Coffee, and will add about 30 employees. The company said the new store will boost local job growth and spur more commerce, housing, and retail opportunities in Spokane’s northern corridor. The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Spokane’s Community Oriented Policing Services is seeking new funding after it missed contract deadlines with the City and trimmed its budget to cover only basic costs, relying on 100 volunteers to run programs. Board Chairman Jim Wilson said the group is raising funds and seeking more volunteers to continue service past 2025 — support from local businesses and community members is needed. KHQ
- ➤ Spokane voters will soon decide on a $240 million parks levy that is part of the Together Spokane proposal — a measure intended to fund more park ranger hires and boost safety — as the Parks Department allocates 35% of the funds to maintenance and security. If only the levy passes, four new park rangers will be added, but if both the levy and a school bond pass, 12 new rangers will be hired to patrol park and school areas. KXLY

- ➤ A new indoor sand volleyball facility—featuring three sand courts and three hard courts—will open in Spokane Valley this weekend.
