COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans Memorial Park in Cheney added an adaptive swing thanks to a generous donor + it gives children and adults with disabilities a chance to play. The swing comes after last year's park overhaul by local groups + making the playground more welcoming and accessible.  KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Washington State Patrol rescued a kitten on I-5 today—officers safely removed the animal from a busy roadway.  KXLY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eastern Washington University President Shari McMahan was named to the Puget Sound Business Journal’s Power 100 list for her role in rebranding the university as a polytechnic institution—she is the only local executive among four university presidents recognized. She will be honored with other leaders at an in-person event next month.  Spokane University District
  • Downtown Spokane is facing a vacancy crisis as empty storefronts and declining business activity prompt local leaders to plan for economic revitalization. City officials will outline steps to attract new tenants and boost local commerce in the coming weeks.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga President Katia Passerini was honored on Oct. 18 at the National Italian American Foundation’s 50th anniversary gala in Washington, D.C. —she received the Dea Roma Special Achievement Award in Academic Excellence, recalling her earlier recognition as a student through a NIAF scholarship.  Gonzaga University
  • Deer Park School District is asking voters to approve a levy that will raise property taxes by 42 cents per thousand and generate nearly $15M for safety and infrastructure upgrades—these funds will replace an aging transportation hub and fix issues at Arcadia Elementary School, with voters deciding on November 4.  KXLY

  • South Hill residents are on alert after cougar sightings were reported in the neighborhood; Mary Jo Stauner saw a cougar on her property early Tuesday morning—prompting concerns about local wildlife safety.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gonzaga transfer Tyon Grant-Foster’s attorneys will present his request for an extra season of eligibility in a Spokane court today—he needs a quick ruling before his basketball season begins in early November. The case follows his previous health issues and NCAA pandemic rules that extended eligibility for players.  The Spokesman-Review
  • WSU’s rushing attack improved in a 22-20 road loss to Virginia as the team gained 143 yards on 35 carries including notable plays by Leo Pulalasi—who forced four tackles—and new starter Kirby Vorhees. Coaches say the Cougars, who surpassed the century mark in three straight games, will work on sustaining a full-game ground effort in upcoming contests.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga sophomore Allie Turner was named to the preseason watch list for the Becky Hammon Player of the Year Award, a list that features players from 19 teams and 12 conferences (Gonzaga’s Yvonne Ejim won the award in 2024). Other sports news shows that four Spokane Chiefs received NHL scouting ratings, Washington State volleyball’s Lucie Blažková earned a weekly honor, Gonzaga’s Drew Pedersen scored a hat trick, and Circling Raven Golf Club was ranked by Golfweek (the course will close for the season until next spring).  The Spokesman-Review
