Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 29th of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spokane’s popular coffee shop Muggies opened a bright pink drive-thru on West Hastings Road on Oct. 18 and served 1,296 drinks, drawing long lines of local fans who enjoyed viral drinks like upside-down strawberry matcha and salted honey butter latte—each cup made with a mission of kindness. Owner Madison Hare said the new location reflects her goal to offer a unique coffee experience for everyone.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga University has established the Russell Larsen Memorial Endowed Scholarship for students from Stevens, Pend Oreille and Ferry counties to help them attend college close to home. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane’s official website is currently down and will be back online as soon as possible. On October 28, the police department received a $186,250 grant to fund mental health and wellness classes for officers and their families—helping with sleep, stress, nutrition, and money management.  City of Spokane
  • With a government shutdown looming and key federal programs at risk, the Spokane Community College food pantry is expanding its services to help students who face financial hardship—especially those who depend on SNAP and Head Start that might end November 1. Student Shelby Due, a single mother, said she may need to rely on the pantry for extra help if benefits are cut.  KHQ
  • Lime will offer free scooter and e-bike rides through November 4th so voters can reach a ballot drop box in Spokane County. Voters can use the code VOTE2025 for two free 30-minute rides to one of 27 drop boxes, including many at local libraries, before they close at 8 p.m. on Election Day — a service to help every vote count —.  KXLY
  • The Spokane Regional Health Department announced that WIC offices in Spokane will close Thursday due to the ongoing federal government shutdown — people with benefits should continue to use them and expect auto-renewal in November as state health officials work on the transition.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at Sacred Heart dressed NICU babies in Halloween costumes—such as two-month-old Asher Hansen as Harry Potter—to help bring normalcy to families during difficult stays. They spent six hours making around 60 costumes and plan to continue supporting families with similar efforts this season.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane physician Gretchen LaSalle said she has not heard from her CDC RSV vaccine workgroup since Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. replaced its members in June—raising concerns that delayed review of an RSV booster may erode trust in federal recommendations.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU's defense got better at tackling after missing 21 tackles against Ole Miss, as they dropped to 12 missed tackles against Virginia and 10 against Toledo. Coaches worked hard in drills and changed the lineup—giving freshman linebacker Sullivan Schlimgen more snaps—to help stop strong running plays by opponents.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Eastern Washington University began Big Sky play with a 3-1 record after four games and will keep competing as the season unfolds.  KXLY
  • Judge Marla Polin granted Gonzaga transfer wing Tyon Grant-Foster a preliminary injunction after a one-hour Spokane courtroom hearing lasted more than twice the scheduled time—allowing him to play this season as the Bulldogs won an exhibition game with an 18th-inning home run.  The Spokesman-Review
  • On Tuesday, high school girls soccer games in the District 6 tournament saw East Valley secure a 3—0 win over Clarkston as Hayden Anderson scored her milestone 100th career goal, while teams like Lewis and Clark, Mead, Richland, Chiawana, University, Walla Walla, Kennewick, and Deer Park also posted wins. The District 6 2A tournament begins Saturday and loser-out games are scheduled for teams such as Gonzaga Prep, Ferris, Cheney, and Ridgeline.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Former Gonzaga standout Drew Timme will begin his third pro season with the South Bay Lakers after his returning rights were traded from the Long Island Nets—this deal brought in guard Nate Williams and a 2027 first-round pick.
