Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Eastern Washington University is set to honor Native American Heritage Month as it revives its Salish helmets in collaboration with the Kalispell Tribe of Indians and Northern Quest Resort and Casino—the football team will debut the helmets tomorrow and invite community support during the game against Sacramento State.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stagnant weather since Wednesday night trapped pollutants under an inversion, lowering Spokane's air quality for sensitive groups to unhealthy plus keeping regional levels moderate. Winds and rain later today will mix the air to improve conditions.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown held a press conference to declare an emergency amid uncertainty over SNAP benefits and the federal shutdown, and she said the city will expedite eviction prevention contracts to help residents stay in their homes—joining local nonprofits already working to support families. County data shows there were 3,558 eviction cases in 2025, with several cases active and in mediation as financial stresses grow.  KHQ
  • The Washington Supreme Court upheld a record-setting $185M award — the largest product liability verdict in state history — for three teachers who suffered brain damage and other illnesses after toxic PCBs leaked from light fixtures at a Monroe school.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Avista completed its rock relocation project at the Monroe Street Dam and will disassemble its crane on November 3, causing street closures. Spokane Falls Boulevard will be closed between Post and Lincoln from 4:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. — traffic on the section between Stevens and Post will be reduced to two lanes — with traffic control personnel on site to guide drivers.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three bird flu cases were confirmed from two Canada geese and one great horned owl near Spokane — health and wildlife officials warned residents not to handle sick or dead birds with unknown causes.  KHQ
  • A state investigation found that miscommunications and policy failures at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center led to the death of 12-year-old Sarah Niyimbona last April when she left her monitored room and jumped from the parking garage — staff took 11 minutes to trigger a hospital-wide alarm. Hospital officials said they have addressed the concerns — while Sarah’s family and investigators continue to review protocols to prevent further tragedies.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Three former Gonzaga players recalled how the shift from the Big Sky to the West Coast Conference in 1979 set the stage for the team’s rise by changing its playing style—coach Dan Fitzgerald’s vision and tougher competition helped build the elite program Gonzaga is known for today. They also noted how the move improved travel, facilities, and exposure to NBA-caliber opponents.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Coach Mark Few has been testing a deep roster that includes returning players like Graham Ike and Braden Huff — new transfers and injury issues add to the mix as the team prepares for the season. Gonzaga will try different lineups in scrimmages to balance scoring and defense as their 2025-26 campaign begins on November 3.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Valley is hosting its first major cross-country event today—men's and women's WCC Championships—on a new course built with lodging tax dollars and state grants. City officials say the soft opening will let them fix issues before a full launch of events next year.  KHQ
  • West Valley won the GSL 2A title with an 8-0 win over Pullman as Claire Busse scored three goals and the Eagles earned a playoff bye to face Deer Park or Clarkston on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Freeman won its league title with a 5-0 shutout of Davenport and will contest the District 6 2B/1B semifinals at The Hub on Wednesday at 3 p.m.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Gonzaga's men's basketball team will head into the 2025 season with many unknown factors and a preseason AP ranking of No.21 — experts say strong frontcourt play and experienced transfers could help them secure a 27th NCAA Tournament bid. Analysts point to key players like Graham Ike, Braden Huff, and Steele Venters as critical to overcoming early season challenges.  The Spokesman-Review
