COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Riverfront Spokane will offer free Looff Carrousel rides for active and retired military members and their families from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Veterans Day, November 11—honoring their service.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jamie Roberts, owner of Three Birdies Bakery, teaches cookie decorating classes at the Kitchen Engine where students learn to design and personalize cookies in a relaxed setting — her Christmas-themed class is set for Nov. 17 and provides tips and supplies for creative decorating.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Christina Isabelli, Gonzaga’s associate provost for global engagement, was named a 2025-2026 Presidential Fellow by the AIEA — a rare honor for top higher education leaders — and will work with a mentor from Santa Clara University to boost Gonzaga’s global programs. She will use the fellowship to align international initiatives with the university’s mission and strengthen its competitive edge in global education.  Gonzaga University
  • At the Central Valley School Board election, moderate candidate Allen Skidmore won the open seat with 58.4% of the vote while conservative incumbent Pam Orebaugh holds a tight lead with 51% against challenger Mark Bitz. Skidmore credited his strong community ties for his win and said he will work with the board to help pass a levy in the future—changes that could shape school funding.  The Spokesman-Review
  • In Spokane, voters approved Spokane Public Schools’ Proposition 1 with 25,938 yes votes making up 60.75 percent and 16,755 no votes, authorizing $200 million in bonds to improve schools. The measure will fund upgrades at 66 schools, including rebuilding Adams and Madison Elementary Schools and creating a four-year Trades High School at Spokane Community College, with repayment over 21 years through annual property taxes and state matching funds of about $37.8 million.  KHQ
  • Tuesday’s election kept the Spokane Public Schools board unchanged as incumbent Hilary Kozel won 58.5% against district parent Jessica Anundson while other incumbents earned secure margins with over 96% of the vote—ensuring board stability for the upcoming terms.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane City detailed its Veterans Day schedule that shows on-street parking meters and kiosks will not require payment on Tuesday, November 11—Public Library branches, Municipal Court, and Community Justice Services will be closed while garbage, recycling, yard and food waste services, along with the Waste to Energy Facility, remain on schedule. Riverfront Park will offer complimentary Looff Carrousel rides for military members and their families—Development Services Center staff and Spokane 311 will be available to handle customer inquiries.  City of Spokane
  • Spokane Transit Authority reached an agreement with Transit App that began November 4 to give all regional riders full access to the app’s premium Royale subscription—features include real-time bus tracking, automatic detour detection, notifications, and tap-to-pay. STA officials said the five-year contract, funded from local budgets, aims to provide more reliable trip information and improve transit convenience.  KHQ
  • Spokane County is inviting residents and business owners to display green lights in their windows from November 4-11 to honor veterans transitioning from active service—local sites including the County Courthouse, Spokane Regional Veterans Services Center and Veterans Arena will also join the tribute.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Monday night, college basketball on the Palouse saw Gonzaga win while Eastern Washington’s men and women both lost close games to the Vandals— the men’s team fell 83—81 after a 35-minute defensive lapse, prompting concern among Cougar fans as the season unfolds.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Today, Hope Soccer and City Parks and Recreation host a ribbon cutting at Grant Park at 2 p.m. to open a new soccer mini-pitch built on an old tennis court by Hope Soccer with sponsorship from ICCU and Musco Lighting—youth games, refreshments, and family activities will follow.  City of Spokane
