Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 9th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local food assistance organizations in Spokane are facing a surge in demand as uncertainty over SNAP benefits leads to longer delays — a South Hill network saw its weekly support double from 40 to 80 families. A northside food bank served 200 families on Thursday — volunteers and donations are being sought to reduce wait times.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new feature film based on the Pulitzer Prize–nominated novel Train Dreams was filmed almost entirely in Eastern Washington with local crews — many from Spokane — capturing real places that add authenticity to the story. The production used wildfire-damaged locations for realism and is set to attract more film opportunities to the area.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane police have begun enforcing the Safe and Accessible Spaces Ordinance today—logging over 300 contacts and issuing over 100 citations for public camping. Thirty-four individuals accepted services while local businesses and residents worry the enforcement might simply push homelessness further from downtown—raising concerns about the new approach.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Saint George's senior Regan Thomas, returning after a summer stress fracture, finished second in the state cross country meet at Sun Willows Golf Course in a time of 18 minutes, 51.4 seconds. Freshman Grace Walsh of Manson won the race in 18 minutes, 22.0 seconds—Thomas said the tougher competition might have affected her performance.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Redshirt freshman Jake Schakel made his first collegiate start for EWU and threw for 451 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in a game that ended with a 29-24 loss to No. 2 Montana. The Eagles came within 15 feet of a game-winning score before Schakel fumbled on the final play—leaving him and the team with a heartbreak finish.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Chiefs built a 4—1 lead and held off a late Portland comeback to win the game 4—3 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday—Owen Martin scored an insurance goal in the second period and a video review overturned a late goal to snap a three-game losing streak. The team will begin its road trip Friday at Penticton.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Spokane Parks Foundation upgraded the basketball court at Fish Lake Regional Park with a new concrete surface, a regulation size basketball pole, backboard and hoop using a grant given to Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf in July. The project finished quickly and the court now connects to an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) pathway.  KXLY
  • Mead boys won the State 4A cross country championship with a team score of 49 points as all five runners finished in the top 20, while Gonzaga Prep ended with 134 points on Saturday at Sun Willows Golf Course. The team improved on last season’s near miss by running together as homegrown athletes—building strong depth through every mile.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Extreme Team is upgrading Parasport Spokane to improve its facilities for adaptive sports, and local outlet KXLY is providing live coverage of the progress. More details on the upgrades will be offered as the project develops.  KXLY
