COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners is helping families still feeling the pinch from the shutdown by restarting its Cuisine for Clients meal program—supported by local restaurant Feast World Kitchen. The group will distribute the first round of meals Monday—using a rotating menu created by refugees.  KXLY
  • Cheney will host the 18th annual Turkey Trot on Nov. 27 at 9 a.m. at Cheney High School — walkers, runners, and dogs of all ages are welcome, with registration at $5 and costumes encouraged as part of the proceeds benefit the Cheney Food Bank — participants can register online or on the day of the event.  KXLY
  • Fresh Soul, in collaboration with Spokane Eastside Reunion Association, will serve 500 free Thanksgiving dinners to community members on November 27 at 10:00 a.m. at Fresh Soul on East 5th Avenue in Spokane — meals will be handed out on a first-come basis.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • GU alumni Steven Karr and Greg Talbott revived Gonzaga’s legacy digital production class to give 11 students hands-on practice in live sports broadcasting. The course now lets students combine classroom lessons with real production work on volleyball broadcasts for ESPN+ — setting them on a path toward sports production careers.  Gonzaga University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane City Council District 2 members will host a Coffee with Council event on Tuesday, November 18 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Carl Maxey Center—where residents can meet Council Members Paul Dillon and Shelby Lambdin to discuss local issues.  City of Spokane
  • A gas line issue forced the closure of Greene Street in both directions between Mission Avenue and Illinois Avenue near the North Spokane Corridor—Avista Utilities is on scene and drivers should use alternate routes as no official detour is provided.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Several Spokane nonprofits, including Catholic Charities Eastern Washington and Family Promise of Spokane, received part of an $800,000 grant from Tacoma-based MultiCare Health System to help with health challenges. The grants were given through the Community Partnership Fund—supporting access to care and reducing food insecurity—awarded to 53 organizations statewide.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washington State is searching for a new athletic director after president Elizabeth Cantwell parted ways with Anne McCoy less than 18 months after her hiring. The potential candidates include Bryan Blair from Toledo, Tyler Mariucci from Fresno State, Jalen Dominguez from New Mexico, Leon Costello from Montana State, and Diana Saubau from Maryland – Cantwell will choose the candidate best able to boost fundraising and lead the transition to the new Pac–12.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Massamba Diop, a 7-foot freshman at Arizona State who overcame visa and language challenges moving from Dakar to play with Real Madrid, is set to bring his guard-like skills to the court today at Desert Financial Arena when Gonzaga meets ASU. His former roommate Ismaila Diagne, now a Gonzaga player, warned him to be careful — advice that comes as both teams prepare for this nonconference game.  The Spokesman-Review
