COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Spokane Transit bus driver reunited Josiah Jennings — a young man with autism who had walked away from his home in Airway Heights — with his family after spotting him during her morning route. Police arrived minutes later, and chief Bradley Richmond honored the driver and her supervisor for their quick actions.  KHQ
  • Food banks in Spokane County work as a coordinated network of 21 pantries under the Emergency Food Assistance Program—managed by Partners Inland Northwest and funded by the Washington State Department of Agriculture—to help families easily find food even when some pantries are open only one or two days a week.  KHQ
  • Siemers Farm in Spokane is giving away free Nantes carrots today and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—visitors should bring a milk-crate container, trowel and gloves to harvest from the two-acre field that may yield 3,000 to 10,000 pounds to help ease food scarcity among local families.  KHQ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Topgolf is in the predevelopment stage for a 35,000 square foot facility planned for Liberty Lake near 1 East Country Vista Drive—according to the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce. There is no start date for construction yet—officials say the project will draw guests from across the region.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The WSU Board of Regents approved a 3.3% tuition increase that will add $385 to in-state undergraduate bills and $445 to graduate bills for the 2026-27 academic year—while also greenlighting a $12M athletics upgrade for Cougar Athletics at Gesa Field, with plans to raise $8M by December 15 through private donations. The board made these decisions to support improved facilities and long-term affordability efforts.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A white-tailed deer killed by a hunter in late October on Drum Road on the Spokane Reservation has tested positive for chronic wasting disease—its sample was processed at the Montana Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and officials are waiting on a second test to confirm the result. Tribal officials say the finding is a serious concern since deer, elk and moose are key to their culture and subsistence hunting.  The Spokesman-Review

  • The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the HALO Bolt ACDC 58830 after warnings of fire and burn risks—Spokane County Solid Waste project manager Ben Hagerott urged residents to drop off lithium ion batteries from smartphones, watches, and power tools at the Spokane Valley facility from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily at no cost.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Garfield resident Patricia Lukens underwent a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital 15 years ago when she was warned she had five years to live without changing her eating habits. Since then, she has lost over 100 pounds and now travels freely — her success reflects the effective care provided by one of the Northwest’s largest weight-loss surgery centers.  The Spokesman-Review
  • NEW Health in Chewelah will use $2 million in federal funding to create clinical and nonclinical jobs and expand dental and workforce development services in northeastern Washington. CEO Desiree Sweeney said the project aims to improve health access across rural counties + strengthen community care.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Dr. Emilio Sulpizio—former Whitworth football player—switched from sports to medicine after his father's death and now works at MultiCare Cancer Institute, where he uses his competitive spirit to help cancer patients. This weekend, as the Whitworth Pirates play their last regular season game, he remains dedicated to guiding patients through their treatment.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • After summer crews cleared runs, mowed vegetation and updated signage, inland ski hills completed key improvements for the winter season. Mt. Spokane will expand snow tubing and school programs while 49 Degrees North, Schweitzer, Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass upgraded facilities—Lookout Pass now features a new heated vault toilet—for a better early season experience.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Freeman Scotties advanced into the playoffs after winning their latest game and the team is now preparing for a challenging series ahead.  KXLY
  • On Friday, state sports saw Mt. Spokane girls soccer win 3-0 over Silas at Union Stadium with two goals by Grace Hughes, while Freeman won 47-6 and Okanogan won 24-0 in state football first rounds. In volleyball, West Valley lost to top-seeded Lynden in the quarterfinals and will play in a consolation match on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.—Pullman advanced after a set win and will face Washington for a state trophy chance.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Forward Brody Gillespie scored two goals, including the overtime winner, to lead the Spokane Chiefs to a 4 to 3 win over the Penticton Vees on Friday night at South Okanagan Events Centre. The 17-year-old, the first overall pick in the 2023 WHL U.S. Priority Draft, tied the game in the second period and then sealed the victory—demonstrating his key role for the team.  The Spokesman-Review
