Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 16th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane Parks and Recreation Park Rangers will host Storytime at the Looff Carrousel in Riverfront Park on Friday, Nov. 21 from 11 a.m. to noon - families enjoy reading, crafts and a $1 ride on the historic carrousel. This event gives local families a chance to spend a fun morning together.  KXLY
  • The new Altamont Liquor and Grocery store on Altamont and Fifth in East Central opened after a $500,000 renovation and has stirred community anger as residents worry about the easy access to alcohol and vapes—city officials plan to challenge the liquor license at its renewal. The owner said he is investing in further improvements while neighbors keep a close eye on changes in their area.  The Spokesman-Review

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study shows that chain restaurants in Washington charge nearly 14% more than the national average, and diners in Seattle pay over 17% extra, so Spokane diners may face higher prices too (WHA used college students to compare menus). The study said that higher taxes, labor rules and other business costs are pushing up dining bills across the state.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Spokane Tribe Department of Natural Resources reported the first suspected case of Chronic Wasting Disease on the Spokane Indian Reservation from a white-tailed deer harvested in Drum Road in late October, with the Montana Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory’s ELISA test returning a positive result and confirmation pending by immunohistochemistry. The Spokane Tribal Wildlife Program urged hunters to test their harvests and dispose of carcasses properly — actions adopted after increased surveillance following a 2024 detection — to protect vital wildlife and cultural traditions.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at Legion Hall in Ritzville to discuss concerns over financial mismanagement and missing audits at East Adams Rural Healthcare. Interim CEO Todd Nida said the board is working to keep services running—audits of 2022 and 2023 uncovered nearly $4.5 million in uncollected accounts receivable amid long-standing documentation issues.  KHQ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Falls Tower project across the Spokane River moves forward as L.B. Stone Properties completes a $3.5 million foundation and submits a permit for a $450,000 parking garage — the 12-story building with 36 luxury condos is set for spring completion. Meanwhile, Jumping Jackalope Ax-Throwing Club plans a move to 1311 W. Sprague Ave. pending city approval — and Catholic Charities has submitted plans for a $20 million affordable housing renovation including a new office and laundry facility at 2240 E. North Crescent Ave.  The Spokesman-Review

  • On Saturday, Dallas Trinity defeated Spokane Zephyr 2-0 at ONE Spokane Stadium—snapping their four-game skid while extending Spokane's losing streak to three. The match saw 18-year-old Sealey Strawn score her second goal of the season.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Bloomsday runner Dennis Doyle, 78, skipped his daughter's graduation to uphold his vow to run the race on the first Sunday in May and maintain a tradition started by his karate instructor. He has battled heart issues and injuries during the race and is set to run again after his right knee replacement in December — proving his unwavering commitment.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Washington State beat Louisiana Tech 28-3 on Saturday with a strong defensive effort that limited opponents to just 10 points in their last four games—key offensive linemen returned and quarterback Zevi Eckhaus threw three touchdowns without an interception. The Cougars now face 9-1 James Madison on the road as coach Jimmy Rogers seeks his first signature win.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The NCAA announced (yesterday) that Washington State’s men’s and women’s cross country teams received at-large bids to the national championships, with the women qualifying for the first time since 1985 and the men making their first appearance since 2016, while Gonzaga runners Logan Hofstee and Jessica Frydenlund earned individual at-large bids. The national event will begin Saturday morning at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia (upcoming).  The Spokesman-Review
  • Adam Miller took extra time during warmups on Friday in Tempe—greeting many former Arizona State colleagues—and struggled early before making key plays that led to his team’s win. Coach Mark Few praised his mental toughness and noted that Miller’s effort helped bounce back from a rough start in a hostile setting.  The Spokesman-Review
