COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities and its partners will run the Christmas Bureau to help thousands of local families by providing $30 grocery vouchers plus a toy and a book for each child as rising costs increase the need. The Bureau will operate at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 11 through Dec. 13 and Dec. 18, and from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 15 through Dec. 17 plus volunteers work toward a $600,000 fundraising goal.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane street outreach teams meet people in need daily by delivering blankets, winter clothes, and conversation while guiding them to additional services. The program resolved 96 encampments in just 12 days—an effort led by Roy Garcia and supported by Catholic Charities.  KHQ
  • Gabriel’s Challenge has launched a Community Care Kiosk at NorthTown Mall using bright purple lights—serving as a resource center with a self-service tablet system and volunteer assistance. The kiosk, which honors a mother's vision to turn loss into community action, will hold its official grand opening on December 2nd.  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trivium is set to celebrate 20 years of their second record Ascendancy at the Podium USA on Friday—joining fellow metal bands Jinjer and Heriot on their Ascend Above the Ashes tour. Tickets starting at $60 are available for the concert, which follows the band's recent release of a three-track EP titled Struck Dead.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Spokane Children’s Theatre presents a musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol that shows Ebenezer Scrooge change from grumpy to kind. The production opens Friday and runs through Dec. 21 — featuring costumes and sets that reflect the Victorian era.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Spokane is opening 50 new emergency homeless shelter beds for people during colder weather at four sites run by Revive Counseling Services, Jewels Helping Hands, YWCA, and Community, Advocacy, and Treatment. Mayor Lisa Brown declared a state of emergency last month to allow faster funding and will also support mobile medication assisted treatment services.  KXLY
  • Officials from the Washington Secretary of State and Attorney General's Office are urging Spokane residents to be cautious with donations for Giving Tuesday. They advise pausing if pressured, checking the organization on the filing system, and donating directly to charities—steps meant to help avoid scams.  KHQ

HEALTH NEWS

  • At age 75, Sally Johnson has worked 53 years as a nurse caring for Spokane patients with opioid use disorder at the Regional Stabilization Center — she also mentors nursing students and provides direct care such as footbaths and medication treatments for those in need.  The Spokesman-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Undefeated Gonzaga and Michigan are in the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas, and Michigan secured first place in a recent win. They will face off tonight at 6:30 p.m. on TNT with one million dollars in NIL funds at stake — a sign that players are now earning a larger share.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Michigan dominated Gonzaga 101 to 61 in the championship game of The Players Era Festival on November 26 in Las Vegas—experts had favored the Bulldogs but early errors led to a blowout loss.  The Spokesman-Review
