Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 30th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Spokane will host a Winter Wonderland black-tie event on Dec. 6 that will feature dancing, music, a silent auction & diverse food options benefiting local small businesses. City leaders, business owners and residents have worked together to transform downtown for this celebration.  KHQ
  • Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2 will see local charities such as the YWCA, Meals on Wheels, Second Harvest, Vanessa Behan, Elevations Spokane and Spokane Humane Society match donations to help vulnerable groups—supporting shelter services, meals for seniors, food access, childcare, therapy for children and pet care. • Catholic Charities, Volunteers of America and The Spokesman-Review are working together to run the Christmas Bureau in Spokane to help local families struggling with high costs by offering $30 grocery vouchers, toys and books for children. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Slightly West of Spokane Artists Studio Tour will open local studios in Cheney and Medical Lake, where 14 artists will display work in ceramics, woodworking, fiber arts, and jewelry across seven venues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can enjoy light snacks and enter a raffle for an appreciation basket—offering a unique chance to connect directly with local creators.  KHQ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Spokane Fire Department has advised residents to avoid buying new fire safety products like fire blankets this holiday season and to use proven basics such as working smoke alarms and a practiced fire escape plan—officials noted that the NFPA and UL have not confirmed the safety of these new options. For small grease fires, SFD recommends using a cooking lid or cookie sheet while turning off the burner—these steps are seen as more dependable than untested solutions.  KHQ
  • After the first snow hit the Inland Northwest, the Liberty Lake Police shared winter driving tips that stress driving slowly, keeping a safe distance, and avoiding cruise control — advice meant to help drivers on icy roads. The department urged everyone to take extra care as cold weather continues.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washington State avenged an earlier loss to Oregon State with a win of 32 to 8 over the Beavers on Saturday at Gesa Field in Pullman as the Cougars' defense recorded three takeaways and six sacks — quarterback Zevi Eckhaus played safely to secure bowl eligibility. Coach Jimmy Rogers now looks ahead to a postseason bowl game in the program's final season without a conference home.  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Mead Panthers won their season opener on Saturday, beating the Wenatchee Panthers 71-51 in a game led by junior Karson Maze who scored 22 points. Seniors Brady Thornton and Noah Kennedy-Gibbens added double-digit scores—helping set the tone as coach Luke Jordan noted a mix of veteran and new players.  The Spokesman-Review
