ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Spokane area teen Brody Three Stars, who was hit by a drunken driver just before Thanksgiving, has woken from his coma—his family says he is now talking and pretending to swing a bat while they hope he will soon leave the hospital and start needed rehabilitation.  The Spokesman-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The SEAS Dean’s Office named Janean J. Schmidt, MA as the Outstanding Colleague for December. She works in the School of Engineering & Applied Science as the Web and Marketing Specialist and is praised for her clear work & strong support for students and colleagues.  Gonzaga University
  • Kendall Featherstone is a Gonzaga student from Austin, Texas who leads the largest student-run club on campus that boosts school spirit at games. She studies marketing and Hogan Entrepreneurial Leadership and will begin a career in sports and brand marketing after graduation—drawing on her role to connect students and communities.  Gonzaga University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane Transit Authority launched a new 'Opportunity' program that offers one-dollar bus fares for low-income riders; qualified riders must have incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level and be enrolled in Washington’s Basic Food Program, and the pilot will run for up to two years or until a $1.14 million funding cap is reached (applications can be submitted online or in person at the STA Plaza).  KHQ
  • Donald C. Brockett, who served as Spokane County prosecutor for 25 years, died on November 14 after battling cancer—he was 89 and is survived by his wife, four children, and several grandchildren. He was known for following strict legal procedures and focusing on victims' rights—practices that defined his long career.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Mayor Lisa Brown introduced a new ordinance to ban the sale and distribution of kratom in Spokane—prompted by police concerns about rising impaired driving and substance abuse—and City Councilmembers Paul Dillon and Zack Zappone sponsored the measure—introduced in committee on December 1—to protect local youth.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Gonzaga Bulldogs are ranked number 5 in the first NET rankings after a 101 to 61 loss to Michigan, marking their worst defeat in the Mark Few era. They will play Kentucky at 4:00 p.m. Friday at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville—Gonzaga will try to bounce back in the next game.  KXLY
  • Former Gonzaga standout Ryan Nembhard scored 28 points and notched 10 assists in the Dallas Mavericks' 131-121 win over the Denver Nuggets on Monday at Ball Arena. He shot 12 for 14 from the field and 4 for 5 from deep—marking his best performance yet this season.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Eastern Washington’s football team has entered a retention phase after finishing a 5-7 season, focusing on keeping young players and replacing key seniors. Head coach Aaron Best said the team will work to maintain promising athletes (including redshirt freshman Jake Schakel) as it prepares for a return to the playoffs.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Mt. Spokane volleyball finished second on Nov. 22 after losing the state 3A title match to North Thurston—coach Darcy McMurray praised her seniors and said the team now faces the challenge of rebuilding their roster. Future seasons will depend on how well they replace seasoned players.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Lauren Whittaker earned the West Coast Conference women’s basketball freshman of the week honor for the second straight week after she scored 25 points in the Coconut Hoops Tournament and recorded her second career double double in the Bulldogs' win over Marquette Golden Eagles—Gonzaga will host Grand Canyon University on December 7 at 6 p.m.  KXLY
