- ➤ The annual mitten coloring contest invites children 12 and younger to submit entries by noon Dec. 22 at the Spokesman-Review office in Spokane. Winners in divisions (ages 4 and younger, 5 to 8, 9 to 12) receive a Mobius Discovery Center gift certificate and feature on Dec. 28. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Families will enjoy holiday fun at downtown Holiday Village from Dec. 11 to 13 at Gesa Pavilion. Attendees can sip hot cocoa + make crafts, snap festive photos and watch local live music at this free event. KXLY
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study by Conservation Northwest shows that shrews in Washington shrink their heads during winter (a tactic to conserve energy) to help them survive. The tiny mammals use echolocation and scent glands to detect prey and evade predators in local forests and gardens. The Spokesman-Review

- ➤ East Francis Avenue between Addison and Standard Street is reduced to one lane in each direction today for needed water main repairs — drivers are urged to slow down and plan alternate routes. KHQ
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Eastern Washington's men's basketball team defeated the Kansas City Kangaroos 90—66 at Reese Court in Cheney on Saturday as coach Dan Monson said the win marked a turning point for the team. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Spokane’s soccer team scored its first goal in 339 minutes when Emma Jaskaniec headed the ball at the 48-minute mark, but Lexington equalized later with a penalty kick — the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Spokane’s defense kept the contest tight throughout the game. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ With Jimmy Rogers leaving for Iowa State after a 6-6 season, WSU is eyeing five candidates to lead the Cougars. Brent Vigen from Montana State is among the prospects praised for his local recruiting ties as WSU plans its next season amid player transfer challenges. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ Charlie Bean has run every Bloomsday since 1977, nearly losing his special status when he once wore his wife’s race bib by mistake—he later confirmed his identity with race photos. He plans to rally his family for the 50th Bloomsday in May. The Spokesman-Review
- ➤ At Saturday night's Teddy Bear Toss, the Spokane Chiefs set a record when 9,087 stuffed animals hit the ice less than five minutes into the second period — beating the 2019 mark and supporting the Christmas Bureau. - ➤ The Gonzaga women's basketball team built a 31-point lead before beating UC Davis 83-72 at McCarthey Athletic Center Saturday (attendance: 4,686), with coach Lisa Fortier noting their strong first half.
