COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jenelle (Sisco) Trimmell, a Gonzaga alum and Program Manager at Microsoft, led a mentoring event through the GIVE campaign in October that raised over $400 while guiding more than 20 students and strengthening ties between Gonzaga and Microsoft.  Gonzaga University
  • Residents celebrated their fifth annual holiday dinner Friday at the historic Ridpath—former hotel now a 206-unit affordable housing building—as neighbors enjoyed a meal provided by Women and Children’s Free Restaurant and Community Kitchen that strengthened community ties.  The Spokesman-Review

CRIME NEWS

  • Spokane County pharmacist Sandra Lee Symington Bang had her license suspended Tuesday by the Pharmacy Quality Assurance Commission for allegedly falsifying prescriptions for controlled substances, and she has 20 days to request a hearing to contest the charges.  KHQ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Shoppers are turning to thrift stores to find festive, unique gifts as the holidays near. Local managers report a 10% jump in secondhand spending and about 1,200 more customers compared to last season — a sign of budget-conscious buying ahead of the holidays.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gonzaga’s fall Personal Branding and Business for Athletes course built leadership skills as student-athletes and business students connected with local pros during Mentor Night and guest sessions. The course concluded after final pitch presentations supported by industry experts — a boost for future NIL opportunities.  Gonzaga University
  • The Mead School District passed a policy that limits employee expression in online and classroom settings. The rules specify guidelines for displaying flags and banners so that disciplinary action may be taken if district operations are disrupted.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The city of Spokane advises residents to recycle holiday cards, wrapping paper, cardboard tubes and shipping boxes while disposing of bows + ribbons, metallic foil, cellophane, string lights, tinsel, tissue paper and non-paper packaging in the trash to reduce waste during the busy season.  KXLY

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tomorrow, Dec. 11, the Spokane Convention Center will host the United States Chess Federation (K-12) Championship where top students vie for national titles. The event runs through Dec. 14 and is poised to draw 1,200 visitors and add over $2 million to the local economy.  KXLY
  • Central Valley girls won 64-50 on Tuesday as balanced scoring helped offset missing key players, including Brynn McGaughy and Eden Sander. The boys also secured a 62-49 win with standout efforts from Orland Axton and Cameron Walls.  The Spokesman-Review
  • 81-year-old runner Steve Moe is set to run his 50th Bloomsday in May & hopes to return to the Spokane course with his family. Moe began running at age 24 to improve his health and now cherishes the race tradition he has maintained through decades.  The Spokesman-Review
