Good morning, Spokane. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 28th of December.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Comma is transforming The Spokesman-Review into a nonprofit community paper after the Cowles family exit, with newsroom staff in place and digital subscriptions for local students. Community donors — from small checks to a $500,000 pledge — are fueling plans for new news boxes, stable journalism jobs, and education partnerships.  The Spokesman-Review
  • Innovia Foundation has opened its annual community grants program for nonprofits in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Organizations should apply early (deadline Jan. 9 with a $1,000 drawing) and submit final applications by Feb. 6.  KHQ
  • Spokane International Airport (Saturday) continued smooth operations for travelers while snow and ice caused delays at other northeastern hubs. A few flights from Dallas-Fort Worth and other cities experienced minor delays, but airport staff said business stayed steady post-Christmas.  KHQ
  • Families in Spokane and North Idaho enjoy Numerica's Five Days of Family Fun. The event kicked off Saturday with ice skating and snow tubing, offers Sunday skate sessions at the Numerica Skate Ribbon, and continues Monday with creative play at Mobius Discovery Center while North Idaho events begin Dec. 31.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • House finches add cheer to Spokane winter as local bird feeders become a hub of activity for birds with bright red plumage. Experts advise regular cleaning of feeders (to prevent bacterial eye disease) as residents enjoy the vivid splash of color against a gray backdrop.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) says the product was produced on Dec. 16 in vacuum-sealed 16-oz. packages sent to retailers in several states, and consumers should not eat or should return it.  KHQ
  • SpokAnimal closed its doors on Saturday as a respiratory virus led to pneumonia cases in the dogs. Shelter staff are testing and treating the animals — the facility remains closed to prevent further spread, while cats are still available for adoption at Kitty Cantina, Petco, and PetSmart.  KXLY
