COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spokane’s Mend-It Café and Repair Café offer free repair services and classes to help residents fix everyday items and reduce waste. Mend-It Café events start at Scale House Market at 4 p.m. Jan. 7 and at Hamilton Street at 1 p.m. Jan. 10, while Repair Café will reopen in May (at Perry Street Market).  The Spokesman-Review
  • The Numerica Skate Ribbon will host a community skate night on Jan. 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to honor Spokane firefighters, with admission at $10.95 for ages 13 and older, $7.95 for ages 3 to 12, and free for children under 2 (skate rentals are $7.95 and helmets are free).  KXLY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Spokesman-Review printed the final installment of reader letters sharing cherished memories of the historic Crescent department store that once brought families together downtown. The feature began printing on Dec. 7 and captures decades-long personal stories from employees, shoppers, and longtime locals.  The Spokesman-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Jeff Lambert (conservation advocate) spent 30 years advancing land preservation in Spokane County and was honored with the 2025 Karen M. Fant Conservation Award earlier this year; his efforts have permanently protected over 9,600 acres and now extend to urban projects with Spokane Urban Nature.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Wall Street is reduced to one lane today for essential water repairs on the section between West Heroy Avenue and West Princeton Avenue — crews will manage traffic with flaggers from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  KHQ
  • Spokane Transit Authority will start design work and public outreach next year for the 9-mile Division Street Bus Rapid Transit project (planned for construction in 2028 and launch in 2030) linking downtown and Hastings Park and Ride.  The Spokesman-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • SpokAnimal closed Saturday after a respiratory virus made 15 of 30 dogs sick, with some developing pneumonia; staff said many are recovering with antibiotics (the clinic is separate from the kennel). Owners who recently adopted are urged to contact the facility if issues arise.  KHQ

SPORTS NEWS

  • 49 Degrees North Ski area opened for the 2025–26 season on Sunday, Dec. 28 in Chewelah – the resort said lifts ran from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will open additional trails as terrain is assessed.  KHQ
  • The Gonzaga women beat Loyola Marymount 87 to 80 in double overtime Sunday at McCarthey Athletic Center with Allie Turner's crucial three securing their 36th straight win, and they will host Pepperdine Tuesday.  The Spokesman-Review
  • A cold front brought wintry conditions on Sunday, Dec. 28 that allowed local ski resorts to open more trails; Schweitzer Mountain ran five lifts, Mt. Spokane opened 12 trails, Lookout Pass groomed 20 of its 41 trails, and Silver Mountain opened two trails.  KHQ
  • 49 Degrees North opened its slopes today near Chewelah, marking the second-latest opening in its history after a long wait for winter weather; crowds filled parking lots and ski lifts buzzed as winter sports enthusiasts celebrated the season’s start.  KXLY
