COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A study by Spokane’s University District found a wide gap in affordable child care for families struggling to find local options (the state lost 2,000 providers in the past 12 years). CEO Juliet Sinisterra said plans for new child care solutions will be implemented in coming years to help create a more family-friendly neighborhood.  KXLY
  • Spokane’s annual Lilac Festival is underway this weekend, with Friday events including the Queen’s Luncheon and President’s Gala and Saturday activities featuring Brewfest, a car show, and a marketplace as the day wraps up with the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade at 7:30 p.m. that honors military groups & Fairchild Air Force Base.   KXLY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday morning at 8:30 a.m., Washington State Patrol slowed traffic on I-90 near Geiger Boulevard after officers saw three pedestrians walking along the median, and one pedestrian tried to cross eastbound lanes — nearly causing a crash as officers escorted the others off the freeway.  KXLY

  • Spokane police say a missing 15-year-old girl was last seen between 3 and 4 p.m. on West Mallon Avenue—she has light brown hair with a purple streak and wore blue jeans with ripped knees—and ask anyone with information to call Crime Check—509-456-2233.  KHQ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan will headline the Outlaw Music Festival this upcoming Thursday at ONE Spokane Stadium with a lineup that also features Lilly Meola, Sierra Hull and Billy Strings. Director of Entertainment Matt Meyer said improved temporary flooring — using Terraplas — and better vendor setup helped the stadium run smoother for its second season.  The Spokesman-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Lisa Brown said that the U.S. Commerce Department canceled $48 million in funding for the Spokane Aerospace Tech Hub, a move that she said undercuts plans to boost aerospace manufacturing—she urged congressional leaders to reverse the decision.  City of Spokane
  • Gonzaga University and the City of Spokane urged the EPA on May 16th at 10 a.m. to reverse its May 2 notice to end a $19.9 million grant — which funds HVAC upgrades in low-income homes and community safety hubs. They said the funding is needed to protect families from extreme heat and wildfire smoke — a move local lawmakers are now expected to support.  City of Spokane
  • City Council member Kitty Klitzke released the latest District 3 newsletter on May 16 at 9:45 a.m. It outlines legislative meetings set for May 18 in the Council Chambers and a park concert series at Audubon Park in July — along with other local events.  City of Spokane
