COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A burst pipe closed Comstock Pool, disrupting summer swimming plans for kids like Benny Larsen who was disappointed after school ended. Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is repairing the pipe — they expect the pool to reopen within a week.  KHQ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Falls Community College President Dr. Kimberlee Messina resigned Tuesday to take the Chancellor position at City College of San Francisco after serving six years and guiding the college through challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic — Vice President of Student Affairs Patrick McEachern is now serving as interim President while the school searches for a new leader.  KXLY
  • Spokane Public Schools is considering a balanced calendar that would shorten summer break from 11 weeks to about 7 to 8 weeks and lengthen other breaks while keeping the same total days of instruction — officials said the change could be implemented for the 2026 to 27 school year if approved.  KHQ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters are battling a 2-acre brush fire with multiple starts near Cheney Spokane Road and South Marshall Road between Marshall Road and Fish Lake Trail near Spokane Cheney Memorial Gardens — the fire is considered suspicious and is under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department, Spokane County Fire District 3 and the Department of Natural Resources. Officials advise residents to avoid the area along Fish Lake Trail.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spokane City Council postponed its vote on an amended camping ban to June 30—after reopening public testimony for 45 minutes and adding an amendment. The proposal would let police act against homeless camping when shelter space is not available and has drawn mixed reactions from residents.  KHQ
  • Mayor Lisa Brown said the City Council deferred the Engagement and Enforcement ordinance but passed two other key rules to boost housing stability and public safety. She said the town remains committed to finding a balanced plan to help people secure stable housing and manage unauthorized camping—ensuring that progress is made without simply shifting challenges.  City of Spokane
