Spokane and Spokane County seek a $1.4 million federal grant to plan better evacuation routes

If you live in Indian Trail or Five Mile, here's what's in the works. Spokane and Spokane County applied together for a U.S. Department of Transportation to plan better ways out of the neighborhoods after the Spokane Complex fires. KHQ says officials expect a decision by the end of the year.

$1.4 millionif the full PROTECT grant award is approved

It would pay for a vulnerability assessment, emergency routes, an evacuation communication plan and early design work.

The Spokane River, steep hills, a large landfill and spread-out development leave the area leaning on a few main roads. The Spokesman-Review reported that the south route off Route 291 eventually became blocked by the fires. The money would also let the city and county study areas beyond Indian Trail and Five Mile.

  • Applicants: City of Spokane and Spokane County, together
  • Grant program: U.S. Department of Transportation PROTECT
  • Decision: expected by the end of the year
